about

We’re very proud to present our newest release: No Harm, an extended play made by the canadian musician John McGovarin, who gives us fresh bedroom pop under the moniker Battrie, a name he credits to the way French kids said the word for 'drums' at a camp he once taught in Normandy, France.

His unlikely influences are audible within each song, but mix together to create a new sound that could win any skeptical audience. Names like Active Child, Jens Lekman and the occasional helping of Nintendo soundtracks give the idyllic inspiration to McGovarin’s musical oeuvre.

The EP is comprised of five tracks that take us into a tropical-arctic soundscape. Some kind of country-western amazon jungle exists in tracks like “The World is Sleeping”, while moments of frigid melancholic peace are found in “No Harm”. The instrumentation creates a restlessness which always seems to be at war by his fragile vocals. Battrie turns every complex thing into something simple, creating a real and sincere filter with each and every one of his melodies. It seems like a few of Battrie's favourite things have been thrown together, turned on their backs and born anew to something that stands out. Familiar repetition of bells, forgotten synth, western lap steel guitar and tropical beats have found an unlikely home in Battrie's No Harm.
